DOUBLE RED SEA DWELLERS
I persuaded ex Navy Clearance diver and commercial diver Richard 'Shorty' Lougher to part with this double red sea dwelle, gorgeous watch with a Mark 3 dial. Shorty owned the watch from new, purchased directly from Rolex in Geneva in 1975 for the sum of £153. Shorty wore the watch every day and the watch went on every single dive. I met up with Shorty and his wife Siew recently in Portsmouth on the site of HMS Vernon, now Gunwharf quays. It was Shorty's first visit since he left the Royal navy in 1975.
The waterfront at Gunwharf is lined with mines and torpedoes in honour of the sites previous history. Shorty spent a while identifying the mines and torpedoes, he got every one right by name and nationality. We then went for a nice lunch, sharing a few good stories. ( See diving watch stories page )
Although it rained it was still a lovely afternoon shared with good company.
Shorty has built a scale model of HMS Bronnington, the minehunter Captained by Prince Charles and has kindly sent me some Photos to include on these pages. Have a look on diving memorabilia page.
Double red sea dweller goes back to work
This is the log entry for Shorty Loughers last dive on the Dive support vessel Stena Seahorse, working for Comex Seaway on the Statfjord 'A' platform in Norway, the date was 6th August 1981. He was as always accompanied by his long time companion Double red Sea dweller. After a 26 year rest from the Sea I took it back to work this year on DSV Wellservicer.
I recently did a 110M sat dive accompanied by this Double red sea dweller, its first sat dive in over 26 years
DOUBLE RED SEA DWELLER MK IV DIAL
One of the last Double reds, this one with a Mark 4 dial. I love the history of this watch, it was owned from new by one of my old navy diving pals. Although not Navy issue in the same way as a Milsub, this watch has spent all of its life in the Military, having done Saturation diving, Bomb and Mine disposal and the Falklands post war operations and both Gulf wars. It also adds interest to the Curved and straight Rolex case back issue/debate. Being complete and original as come from Rolex at manufacture with the curved Rolex writing. The debate goes on!!!
Another MkIII double red Sea dweller
Another Mk III double red sea dweller, this one having spent most of its life in the North Sea sat diving, now retired and taking life easy.
